A lot has been written lately about the economic troubles of the world today, and how it effects everyone, including Internet marketers.

The optimists say it is a HUGE opportunity to make money, while the doom and gloomers say no one will buy anything in times like these so we are in as much trouble as the banks.

Personally, I think the answer is somewhere in the middle, and as always, it depends on what is it you are selling!

The housing market is in the toilet, so if you are a realtor trying to sell houses or a house painter who depends on people fixing up their houses so they can add value to the sale, you’re probably not going to do very well at times like these.

And since the price of Gasoline is getting ridiculous world wide (and I’m pretty sure that no matter WHAT happens, it’s NOT going to come back down very much), it’s probably not a great time to be selling brand new SUVs that get 12 miles to the gallon.

In fact, no matter WHAT you’re selling, if it costs money that your clients will have to pay out of pocket, a recession will probably effect your business adversely, as there simply will be not as much disposable cash in the pockets of your prospects.

But it seems to me that there are still some great opportunities that can be taken advantage of in times like these.

Think about it …

The banks are going under left and right!

The housing market hasn’t been this bad on over 30 years!

Foreclosures are reaching RECORD proportions!

The stock market just saw it’s largest drop in a single day, in it’s entire HISTORY!

Fuel prices are at an all time high and continuing to rise at an alarming rate!

Airlines can no longer afford to run their routes and are cutting back, joining forces, shutting down, or laying off employees as fast as the prices of their fuel continues to go up!

And people are losing their jobs by the thousands … WORLD WIDE!

Yes … WORLD WIDE! This is NOT just an american crisis. Things are bad EVERYWHERE!

But if people are losing their jobs, or can’t afford to go out to play, they will be at home more.

And that means they will probably be surfing the net more, looking for jobs, trying to find out alternative ways to make money, trying to find places to sell their possessions, or just out of plain boredom!

And whenever people are surfing the net looking for stuff, there is a unique opportunity to make money as a Publisher of Contextual Pay Per Click advertising, like Adsense.

Because it is FREE for the people doing the surfing, to click on such ads, they will always do so when the search engines send them to a page that is relevant to their interests, but that just doesn’t quite satisfy their needs.

So … more Surfers, spending more TIME on the web, means a unique opportunity for us as pay per click advertising Publishers!

All we need to do is get our pages in front of those surfers, by building highly optimized and tightly targeted sites that the search engines will send them to, when they do their searches.

So …

What’s the first step to taking advantage of this opportunity?

Do some research and find out what people are searching for in these times.

Go to Google Trends at and see on n hourly basis what the top 100 searched on subjects are. Keep track of them over a day or two to see which ones are consistent and you’ll start to see patterns emerging.

Or just use you head and think about what people might be thinking about in times like these.

One such subject that you can be SURE they’ll be searching for would be information and articles about what is happening to the economy, and what the experts say lies in their immediate future.

So building a highly optimized blog that was highly targeted to a specific area of economic news, that included some original articles (or even targeted BORROWED articles) and a couple of relevant news feeds (including video and audio feeds) would probably get you some traffic from the Search Engines.

And if you have Adsense or any of the other pay per click advertising mediums on those pages, you would probably get some of those visitors to click through to some of those ads.

Cause remember … As I said before, these people are looking for answers, and will click on these well designed ads that cost them NOTHING, so they are quite happy to do so in search of the answers to their problems.

All YOU have to do is get your pages in front of them and place the ads on those pages where they will see them.

And while you probably won’t make a fortune from any one blog, enough of them could make you a lot of money, EVEN in times like these when the majority of the populous is running scared!

There will ALWAY be people who make fortunes in good times. And there will always be people who make fortunes in what the world sees as BAD times.

And frankly, it’s usually the same people who make the money in both, because instead of dwelling on the problems of the world, they see the opportunities in everything. The opportunities that ALWAYS exist in any situation, if you just look at it in the right light ;o)

I agree that people more than ever are going to be looking for solutions to their problems on the internet and that provides a great opportunity for things like contextual ads for companies that can bring them those solutions.

Also, don’t forget about online retail… people will do more comparison shopping online – especially with the price of gas.

Your very right Len, and these people are getting desperate to find some way to make an income online. I’ve noticed more spam showing up in my inbox, a lot on Ad Blasting, like send 100 million emails for $25.00 and such. these scammers are trying to get these people to use their scam to make easy money. Knowing nobody will ever see those emails they send.
I’m in the Natural health Niche as the huge Corporations have destroyed our food supply and all package foods are worthless as they contain to many chemicals and additives that destroy our health.
That is why I try to help people see that Natural is the only way your health will ever get back where Nature intended it to be.
Our Country is now known as the sickest society in the world.

We have to take back the control of our health and reject these poisons that are in our food supply.
I really admire your intellect on these matters and you are a great mentor.
    Thanks Len

I think the opportunity, or not, is in the eye of the beholder. I know I’ve always made more money in ‘bad’ markets than ‘good’ ones.

Why? ’cause I’m not gonna be ducking. I’m lucky enough to have a little cash and almost no debt. To me – stocks and real estate aren’t buying opportunities yet…but you can almost see them from here!

Very well said, Len. People need solutions, not more problems. They also need to know that there are mentors like us out there to help them…but are they ready? Or, will they cry and whine? But for the average “Joe” or “Josephine” they can only watch with envy. Wish your message could reach millions more and that they could learn from you and prosper.

    Well said Rex.

Spoken like the true entrepreneur that I know you are ;o)

    Thanks Candace,

I agree. We can only put it out there and hope that a few see it and recognize it for what it is.

The opportunities are always there if only they would look at them in the right light.

Len: With all the “bad” news everybody is hearing these days, it is refreshing to hear of hope and possibilities. There will always be opportunities but one of the biggest things people need help with is getting rid of fear. Fear will always keep you from moving forward.
